Where We Come From. And Where We’re Going.

There was a time when buying furniture in Chennai was a rather serious affair. A dining table wasn’t chosen for a season. It was chosen for a generation. Sofas survived children, grandchildren, countless cups of filter coffee and, occasionally, a complete change in décor. Furniture was built to stay.

Our story begins in that world.

The Lifespace Collective traces its roots to the Jayabharatham Furniture family, a name that grew alongside Chennai’s furniture retail and manufacturing landscape. It was a world of timber and workshops, craftsmen and customers, measurements, finishes and the quiet satisfaction of making something properly. That legacy taught us something invaluable: good furniture has very little interest in being temporary.

But homes changed.

Walls came down. Spaces became lighter. Lifestyles became faster. People wanted less clutter, more flexibility and homes that felt unmistakably their own. And somewhere along the way, furniture stopped being simply something you placed inside a room. It became part of the way the room itself was imagined.

That shift became the starting point for The Lifespace Collective.

We took what we knew — materials, craftsmanship, manufacturing and the discipline of making things well — and brought it into a more contemporary design language. Today, The Lifespace Collective sits comfortably between two worlds.  We believe in the wisdom of old-school craftsmanship, but we’re equally interested in new ideas. We appreciate beautiful materials, but never at the expense of comfort. We like clean lines, thoughtful details and spaces that feel considered without looking as though they tried too hard.

The result is a way of designing that feels timeless, contemporary and quietly individual.

Premkumar Srinivasan

Co-Founder & Director

Some people discover furniture.

Premkumar Srinivasan pretty much grew up in it.

Born into a family deeply rooted in Chennai’s furniture industry, his early education happened as much around factory floors and showrooms as it did in classrooms.

Wood grains, finishes, proportions, upholstery, production conversations, craftsmen, vendors and customers were simply part of everyday life. You could say furniture became his second language. Thankfully, he decided to do something interesting with it.

Drawn naturally towards design and spatial thinking, Premkumar went on to study Interior Architecture at CEPT University, where his understanding of furniture expanded into something larger, architecture, spatial planning, materiality, human behaviour and the delicate balancing act between what looks beautiful and what actually works.

That combination would eventually become his design signature.

Part inherited instinct.
Part architectural discipline.
And a healthy dislike of things that exist purely for decoration.

As Director of The Lifespace Collective, Premkumar brings together the practical intelligence of generations spent making furniture with the curiosity of a contemporary designer. His approach is restrained but never predictable. Materials matter. Proportion matters. Comfort certainly matters. And details, especially the ones you may not immediately notice, matter enormously. Whether it is a single piece of furniture or an entire interior, the intention is never to simply make something look impressive.

It is to make it feel right!
